Quantum Computing’s Bitcoin Threat Looms, but Action Today Can Safeguard Tomorrow

Quantum computing, though still in its early stages, could become a significant threat to Bitcoin and other proof-of-work cryptocurrencies in the coming years. Amit Mehra, partner at Borderless Capital, shared insights at the Global Blockchain Congress Dubai 2025, emphasizing the venture firm’s focus on quantum resistance technologies. While Mehra predicts that mature quantum capabilities won’t emerge until the end of the decade, recent rapid advancements in chip and decentralized compute technologies make developing post-quantum security increasingly urgent.

Quantum computers leverage principles of quantum physics to process data exponentially faster than current machines, potentially breaking the encryption methods safeguarding Bitcoin and other digital assets. This has urged developers and investors to explore new security frameworks to future-proof blockchains.

Contrasting views underline the urgency of this threat. Charles Edwards, founder of the quantitative Bitcoin fund Carpriole, believes immediate action is necessary. He warned on social media that if Bitcoin fails to implement quantum-resistant solutions within the next year, traditional assets like gold could permanently outpace it.

Efforts to address the quantum risk are underway. In July, SUI Research introduced a novel cryptographic framework that protects several blockchains—including SUI, Near, Solana, and Cosmos—without requiring disruptive hard forks or key resets. However, this solution does not yet extend to Bitcoin or Ethereum.

Beyond private sector initiatives, government entities are eyeing quantum computing’s strategic importance. Reports indicate the US Department of Commerce is considering funding quantum research to maintain technological leadership amidst global competition.

As quantum computing evolves, the blockchain community faces a critical challenge: to secure digital currencies against future quantum threats before the technology becomes capable of undermining current defenses.
