Relai, the Swiss Bitcoin-only investment platform, has become one of the first crypto asset service providers (CASPs) to receive approval under the European Union’s landmark crypto regulatory framework, MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation). On Thursday, France’s financial markets regulator, Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF), officially granted Relai a MiCA license, enabling the Zurich-based company to roll out regulated Bitcoin services across France and eventually the wider European market.
Founded in 2020, Relai offers a seamless BTC-only platform where users can buy, sell, and save Bitcoin with full self-custody, empowering individuals to maintain sole control of their assets. The MiCA license authorizes Relai to facilitate SEPA payments within the EU and allows for higher trading limits against the euro, setting the stage for broader adoption and enhanced user experience.
Relai’s CEO and co-founder, Julian Liniger, expressed pride in being among the first Bitcoin companies to secure this certification. “We’re incredibly proud to be one of the first Bitcoin companies to get the MiCA license and are eager to expand to France first and Europe in a second step,” he stated.
Co-founder Adem Bilican emphasized the milestone’s significance for the broader Bitcoin industry, saying, “Our goal is clear: Bringing Bitcoin to as many people as possible. Simple, secure, regulated.”
Relai’s achievement follows their $12 million Series A funding round in late 2024, led by U.S. venture capital firm Ego Death Capital alongside notable backers such as Plan B Bitcoin Fund, Timechain, and Solit Group.
This development coincides with similar moves by leading crypto platforms, as Blockchain.com recently received a MiCA license from the Maltese Financial Services Authority, underscoring the growing momentum for regulated crypto services in Europe.
